It’s great to relax on the beach or enjoy the food in the local taverna, but knowing something about an area’s cultural heritage can really add to your holiday. The Mani has its own very distinct cultural identity, and this modern museum in Gythio is designed to help visitors get a feeling for the Mani’s unique character.
To get a real feeling for the Mani and its cultural heritage, make a beeline to this modern museum in the central square of Gythio.
The Culture Centre sets out to inform visitors about the area’s unique cultural heritage and to "interpret" the Mani’s special character. The exhibits focus on how Maniots adapted their way of life in various different times and historical periods. Some exhibits are historically significant, and others are everyday objects with symbolic value.
One room in the museum looks into local products and how they are produced and processed. There are some lovely photos by G. Vourlitis and a good collection of exhibits which help visitors to understand the way of life here and how it is connected with local produce.
The second section looks at Gythio in more modern times, especially at trade, the port, immigration, photography, music, poets, journalism and education.
Mani’s past is connected with present day life in a special “Tourism Promotion Hall” with interactive touchscreens where you can find out about various attractions such as monuments, beaches, churches, archaeological sites and also learn about cultural events and local cuisine.
