Poulithra is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Arcadia. It’s the perfect place to spend a lazy day relaxing on the beach, swimming in the crystal-clear waters and enjoying a meal in one of the small tavernas. You can also go for a stroll around the village with its picturesque houses and wander down to the small harbour with the fishing boats.
Poulithra is in the foothills of Mount Parnon but looks out onto the Aegean, and it combines an “island feel” with the mountain scenery of the Peloponnese. Despite all this, it has not been discovered by mass tourism, so it’s an authentic Greek day at the beach!
It is believed that this is where ancient Polichni was situated, and that this is where the village’s current name comes from (Pulichra in the Tsakonian language). The citadel of the ancient city was built on Vigla hill, next to the port. In medieval times, a square tower which was probably used as a lookout was also built there. Only a few archaeological finds from Polichni have been recovered - mainly from the tombs which are to the northwest of the hill, near the Poulithra to Peletos road. They were handed over to the Archaeological Museum in Astros in 1964.
The Mana cave near the village on the road to Ai Giorgis (St George) is full of water from the mountain and provided the village’s water supply until recently. There was also a water mill which ground wheat and barley for the village. Unfortunately, only speleologists currently have access to the cave, but you can see the ruins of the impressive aqueduct that carried the water to the watermill.
Poulithra has been part of the "Elonas Monastery-Haradra Leonidio-Mana Cave and Blue Lake" Natura area since 2016. This is the long gorge in the eastern part of Mount Parnon which runs from Myrtos to Leonidio and Poulithra, crosses the site of the Elona Monastery and ends at the village of Kosmas.
Did you know that
Poulithra is 7 km from Leonidio and 92 km from Tripoli.
The village features hotels and rooms for rent.
