Most people agree that the monastery was built during the 18th century -probably on the site of an older one. It is a major pilgrimage site and is located on the outskirts of Kalteza village, on a hill surrounded by oaks, pines and cypresses. It honours Saint Nicholas, the Prophet Elias and the Transfiguration of the Saviour.
It functioned as a spiritual centre during the Turkish occupation and played an important role during th 1821 Revolution. The First Peloponnesian Senate was established there on May 26, 1821. Because of this, it was set on fire by Ibrahim Pasha's troops, and then had financial difficulties and faded into obscurity. It was re-founded and rebuilt in the first decades of the 20th century, maintaining the fortress architecture of the original.
It is 30 km from Tripoli.
