Anniversary event celebrating 30 years of the Kalamata International Dance Centre.
Tradition is memory. Dance is memory. Song is memory.
The dance performance Fones is the result of the collaboration between choreographer Panagiota Kalimani and female and male choir members from the Friendship, Solidarity and Culture Clubs A and B of the Municipality of Kalamata. The creative process began with the Kalamatianos dance, a traditional circular dance that is closely linked to the history and collective memory of the city.
Through two workshops on vocal and movement improvisation, the group focused on the structure, rhythm and dynamics of the Kalamatianos, seeking new ways to experience and reinterpret it. In this performance, the structure of the traditional dance and song is reshaped through the personal narratives and memories of the participants.
Through these stories, voices and bodies compose a new collective narrative, where the traditional rhythm of the Kalamatianos is transformed into a living archive of their memory and experience. Dance became a meeting point between past and present, while voice and movement came together in a performance that explores how memory is transmitted and transformed through time.
At the Amphitheatre of the Kalamata Castle, a place deeply connected to the city’s history and cultural identity, the voices and bodies of women and men engage in a dialogue with the past and the present. The rhythm of the Kalamatianos and the pulse of the music echo within the castle, transforming the performance into a ritual where collective memory comes alive.
The participatory work «Fones» was presented for the first time in the framework of the «Anoixta Pania» Festival 2022.
