Το μικρό, παραδοσιακού ύφους, χωριό της Ελάτης είναι κτισμένο σε υψόμετρο 1200 στο δυτικό Μαίναλο και η διαδρομή μέσα στο γενναιόδωρο τοπίο του βουνού είναι εντυπωσιακή. Λίγο έξω από το χωριό ένας ξυλογλύπτης-οικολόγος εμπνέεται από τη φύση για τις δημιουργίες του από φυσικά ξύλα.

Όπως λέει και το όνομά της, εδώ παίρνουμε βαθιές ανάσες και απολαμβάνουμε τον ζωογόνο αέρα από τα ελατοδάση. Το μικρό, παραδοσιακού ύφους, χωριό είναι κτισμένο σε υψόμετρο 1200 στο δυτικό Μαίναλο και η διαδρομή μέσα στο γενναιόδωρο τοπίο του βουνού είναι εντυπωσιακή. Κάποτε ονομαζόταν Γαρζένικο που στα σλαβικά σημαίνει «πόλη του δάσους». Πολύ κοντά στην Ελάτη βρίσκονται οι μικροί οικισμοί Πυργάκι και Μεθύδριο. 

Το τμήμα 4 του δικτύου μονοπατιών menalotrail συνδέει την Ελάτη με τη Βυτίνα και το τμήμα 3 με το Ζυγοβίστι. 

Δημιουργίες ξύλου. Λίγο έξω από το χωριό θα συναντήσετε τον κύριο Χρήστο Σιμόπουλο, ξυλογλύπτη, φυσιολάτρη και φιλόζωο -καθώς έχει πολλά γαϊδουράκια και άλογα.

«Δεν θέλω να γίνω μεγάλος καλλιτέχνης, στόχος μου να ζω κοντά στη φύση», λέει ο ίδιος. Το εργαστήριό του είναι γεμάτο έργα, εργαλεία ξυλογλυπτικής και πρώτες ύλες -όπως εντυπωσιακά σε σχήμα και χρωματισμούς κλαδιά και ρίζες από κέδρους, δρυς, σφενδάμους. Τα μαζεύει, με ειδική άδεια που έχει πάρει, όταν κάνει περιηγήσεις στα γύρω δάση. Κάθε κομμάτι ξύλου είναι μοναδικό και του δίνει την ιδέα για το τι θα δημιουργήσει -συνήθως έπιπλα, φωτιστικά και διακοσμητικά αντικείμενα. 

Ο χώρος ήταν παλιό σχιστήριο ελάτων. Η φύση έγινε έμπνευση για τον ξυλογλύπτη που κατάγεται από ένα χωριό της Μεγαλόπολης και πριν πολλά χρόνια έχει φύγει για την Αθήνα, όπου έμαθε την τέχνη δουλεύοντας σε εργαστήρια κατασκευής επίπλων.
